Is your pet at risk?

Two groups face the highest risk of undetected heart disease. If your pet falls in either category, this screening is not optional — it is essential.

Large & Giant Breed Dogs — Any Age

Genetic predisposition to DCM & cardiac disease

German Shepherd — large breed dog at risk for dilated cardiomyopathy

These breeds carry a known genetic risk of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The disease has a protracted subclinical phase with no visible symptoms for months or years before becoming life-threatening.

Senior Pets — 5 Years & Above

All breeds of dogs and cats

Senior yellow Labrador — cardiac screening recommended from age 5

Beyond age 5, the incidence of mitral valve disease, arrhythmias, and HCM rises sharply. Annual cardiac screening becomes as essential as annual vaccination.

Dogs 5+ All breeds — MVD risk rises with age. 100% of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels develop a heart murmur by age 10.
Cats 5+ 1 in 7 cats has HCM. Most show no signs until heart failure is imminent — median survival after CHF is as low as 92 days.

What your pet can't tell you

Dogs — When Symptoms Do Appear

These are late signs. By the time they're obvious, disease is often advanced. Most dogs with cardiac disease show no symptoms at all until the final stages.

  • Tires quickly on walks — exercise intolerance
  • Persistent cough lasting more than 2 weeks
  • Excessive panting without exertion
  • Rapid or laboured breathing at rest
  • Pot-bellied appearance (fluid accumulation)
  • Fainting or collapsing episodes

Cats — The Silent Risk

Cats are instinctively wired to hide illness. By the time symptoms appear, the disease is often at a crisis point.

Disease progression in a cat with HCM
~90% of disease progression — completely silent Symptoms appear — advanced stage

By the time your cat shows distress, 90%+ of cardiac function may already be lost. Once in congestive heart failure, median survival is as low as 92 days.

Echocardiography is the only reliable way to detect feline HCM early — before symptoms appear. Your cat may look completely healthy and still have significant cardiac disease.

India-specific finding

A 2024 study published in the Indian Veterinary Journal (ICAR) found that 1 in 4 Indian dogs with health issues had cardiac arrhythmias — with Labradors being the most affected breed at 29.82%. Dogs over 6 years accounted for 59.64% of all cases.

Echo (Echocardiography)

Real-time ultrasound of your pet's heart — the gold standard for detecting structural disease, valve problems, and cardiomyopathy before symptoms appear.

ECG (Electrocardiogram)

Detects arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities, and electrical heart issues. Essential for large breeds and dogs on long-term medication.

BP (Blood Pressure)

Hypertension silently damages the heart, kidneys, and eyes. A 2-minute BP check can reveal life-threatening high blood pressure in pets who appear healthy.

Thoracic X-Ray

Assess heart size, lung patterns, and detect early signs of congestive heart failure — before breathlessness or coughing becomes severe.

Common questions

What is SKS Heart Pawject?

SKS Heart Pawject is SKS Veterinary Hospital's nationwide pet heart screening initiative — India's first dedicated pet heart screening camp programme. The Visakhapatnam edition (SKS Pet Pawject) offers expert pet heart screening for dogs and cats at an introductory ₹99 consultation fee.

What does the ₹99 cover?

The ₹99 fee covers a structured 30-minute expert cardiac consultation with SKS's specialist team — the same consultation that ordinarily costs ₹999. You also receive flat 50% off on all cardiac investigations booked on the day: ECG, Blood Pressure, Echocardiography, and Thoracic X-Ray.

Can I bring more than one pet?

Yes — you can register multiple pets in a single booking. Add each pet using the "Add another pet" button. All pets will be seen in the same 30-minute slot.

My pet seems perfectly fine. Is screening still useful?

Yes — especially for cats and large-breed dogs. Heart disease is largely silent in its early stages. A normal result is valuable baseline data too.

What should I bring on the day?

Bring your booking confirmation email or reference number, any previous medical records or cardiology reports, and your pet on a leash or in a carrier. Avoid feeding your pet for 2 hours before an echocardiography screening.

Is the ₹99 payment refundable?

The registration fee is non-refundable.

Is the payment secure?

Yes. All payments are processed by Razorpay — a PCI-DSS Level 1 compliant payment gateway. We never store your card or UPI details.

Don't wait for symptoms that may never come — until it's too late.
